Web Analytics 102 + Google Analytics Tips and Tricks

Myjive (at NC Music Factory) (map)

Selected By: Bermon Painter

Bermon Painter (@bermonpainter) will be presenting this meetup and web analytics & some tips + tricks with Google Analytics. Don't forget to answer the questions when you RSVP. You might win a nifty prize.

Based on the initial feedback we'll increase the level of discussion a bit and ignore some of the basic bits of analytics.

The meetup will break down like this:

Rethinking web analytics: 7:00 - 7:30

There's so much data at your fingertips, but so few insights. I want to move beyond typical and common clickstream data that just answers what and move on to the why. Knowing the why will give us insight and help us make intelligent, actionable decisions on the web.

Google Analytics Tips + Tricks: 7:30 - 8:00

It sounds like most folks in the group have a decent grasp of analytics which is awesome. We'll dig in and cover some down and dirty advanced tips + tricks.

  • Tracking e-commerce transactions
  • Tagging, tracking and running reports on marketing campaigns
  • Tracking events (this is my absolute favorite tool, and you'll learn a little javascript)
  • Working with multiple sites and subdomains
  • Configuration best practices
  • Segmentation and filters

Q&A: 8:00 - ?

The tips + tricks will probably blur into the Q&A. Bring your questions/problems and I'll see what I can answer or at a minimum find you an answer after the meetup.

Directions to MyJive

There were a few problems finding MyJive last time (including myself who ended taking a "shortcut" via Google Maps that led me to a dead end street). Google maps is dirty, filthy liar so be careful if it tries to take you off of Graham Street.

The easiest way to get there (and the only way I really know) is from N. Graham St. MyJive is just north of Elmwood & Pinewood Cemeteries in the same office space as Creative Loafing.

Going north on N. Graham Street:
If you're inside the 277 loop you'll travel north on Graham Street and stick to your left hand lane. You'll go under the 277 underpass then take your first left on Seaboard Street. There will be a left hand turn lane and I believe they have a big sign up with an arrow to "NC Music Factory".

NC Music factory will be on the right just after Maxwell Street. MyJive is the building across from the Black Bear Saloon there's a guest parking area in-between with a few parking spots. If those are full you can park on Seaboard St or if you keep following Seaboard St. it'll do a 90º turn to the right and become Hamilton St.

View a custom Google Map that highlights parking and the building that MyJive is in.

Good stuff Bermon, thanks! I think a good follow-on would be some tips on analyzing the data and maybe some before/after case studies. Just a thought. :)
